Badi Lake, though artificial, has never got its natural vicinity plucked. Another name of Badi Lake is Jiyan Lake which is named after Jana Devi who was the mother of Maharana Raj Singh I, the builder of Badi Lake.

The lake is located 12 km from Udaipur city in the village of Badi. As it is outside the city area, it is usually less crowded, making it perfect for tranquillity seekers. The lake is surrounded by hills from all sides adding up to its beauty. During the rainy season, you can even catch the view of small streams falling from these hills.

The main advantage of having it outside the city area is it’s devoid of any commercial activity. It has very few stalls and no noise of hookers. Everything adds up here to create contentment in isolation.

This 400 years old lake was build covers an area of 155 km2 which had acted as a saviour in 1973 droughts by delivering water to the people of Udaipur city and nearby villages. Therefore, though it no highly popular, it is vigilant that always holds prime importance for the city.

The Shortest Route to Reach Badi Lake

Generally, it is preferred to use one of the two ways, and both the routes lead from Fatehsagar Lake- one which goes through Liyo ka Gudha, and another one from the Rani Road.

For the first root you need to reach Neemuch Mata and from there follow the boundary of Fatehsagar. Take a left turn after 12 km and go straight for another 2 km and you will reach Badi Lake. On this route, you will have Pratap Gaurav Kendra as a midway tourist destination which you can visit if you are interested in the history of Udaipur city.

Another way goes through the city via Sajjangarh Fort, also known as Monsoon Palace. For this, you need to reach another side of Fatehsagar. From hotel Lalit Lakshmi Vilas, take a left turn and reach Rani Road. From there, go straight to have your destination next to you. The total distance is 10 km.

If we compare both the ways, you should try both. The first one will let you visit Pratap Gaurav Kendra, and it is owned by lushed green trees making the path shady and calm.

When you return, you can choose the second path where Sajjangarh Fort can be your next destination after Badi Lake. Also, you can visit Rani Road and have delightful corns amidst the breeze.

How Much Time Does One Require to Spend at Badi Lake?

Badi Lake may appear to you as just “one of the lakes” of Udaipur, but the picturesque location allows you to carve out the best memories. The pavement built along is the shore of Badi Lake is 180 m long and 18 m wide.

With the Chattris built on the outer side of the payment, Badi Lake gets the royal touch of Udaipur. You can get down to the stairs similar to the one which you will see on the ghats of Udaipur.

While sitting on the payment, you click may hold the lake and its walls as background. As we aforementioned that the lake is surrounded by hills, youth may choose to climb one of them. Officially, there are no trekking spots nearby, but people do try to reach on the top of “Dragon Hill” or “Bahubali Hill” a hill, located near the entry gate of pavement, got its name from the shape of its peak.

All these activities may not take more than an hour or two, but it depends on the visitor how much time he wishes to take out for the stay. You can visit the lake anytime as there are no restrictions, but it is not considered safe to go there during night hours as it is situated in a remote location. Also, the pavement is only open during day hours.

When Should I Visit It?

Like every tourist destination in Udaipur, Badi Lake’s beauty gets on the peak during August-end or September month; after monsoon ends. Due to rains, it gets completely filled, and hills covered with lush green trees appear all around.

If nature gets in your favour, you may also be able to view small streams flowing from the top, reaching to the fathomless chasm.

But one must note that during this period, trekking isn’t possible as the thorny bushes cover the surface, the ground becomes muddy, and there is also the risk of reptiles.

If you wish to go trekking, visit the place in late October morning when the weather becomes colder, mist starts appearing, the lake becomes mysterious, and climb an adventure.

Badi Lake is a place one must not skip while visiting Udaipur. Though, you would have already seen the primary lakes such as Pichola and Fatehsagar, visiting Badi Lake is still worthy enough for a visit due to its different scenic beauty that no other lake in Udaipur holds.

As it has some major attractions around, even if you are running out of time, it won’t disturb your schedule.
