Gadisar is amongst the oldest artificial lakes of Rajasthan- housed in the eight hundred-year-old cities of Jaisalmer. Its requirement was obvious at the time of the establishment of Jaisalmer. In the 12th century, it was the only source of water for the people of Jaisalmer. Now, the lake is connected to Indira Gandhi Canal, and because of that it never dries.

Besides that, Gadisar Lake even has cultural and religious importance. It has carried Rajasthan’s heritage present in the form of Ghats and shrines present on the embankment of the lake.

History of Gadisar Lake

  • The historical significance lies in the fact that it was built by the founder of Jaisalmer- Rawal Jaisal, to satisfy the water requirements of his people.
  • Later it was redesigned during the reign of Maharawal Gadri Singh in the mid-fourteenth century.
  • The lake went through a few reconstructions after that. One of the significant additions was the establishment of Lord Vishnu’s shrine at the starting of the 20th century. It was placed near the entrance of Gadisar Lake known as Tilon-Ki-Pol.

Things to Do

  • Gadisar Lake is a picturesque location whose charm is enhanced by the ghats, chattris, and shrines present on the bank of Gadisar. You can walk along the shore and discover the lake from different locations. One can also have a view of Jaisalmer Fort from here.
  • If you wish to discover temples of Hindu gods and goddesses, you must visit the shrines present around the lake.
  • It is an excellent location for bird watching where you can watch some migratory birds during the winter season.
  • If you like boat rides, Gadisar Lake is one of the most alluring tourist spots for you. Here you can experience a boat ride at minimal rates:
    • Row Boat- INR 10
    • Paddle Boat- INR 50
    • Shikara- INR 100

At times, the queue for boat rides is very long. Due to the limitation of the number of boats, it may take some time before you get into a boat. Therefore, it is recommended to make a schedule keeping this fact in mind.

The entry is free for Indian citizens as well as for foreigners.

Timing

Although the lake is open always, you can visit it between morning 8 AM to 8 PM on any day of the week for all seasons.

How to Reach

  • It is just 1.5 km and 2 km away from Jaisalmer Railway station and Jaisalmer Bus Station respectively. You will easily get a taxi or Rickshaw from here. However, if you wish to explore alleys of Jaisalmer along with this lake, you can travel on foot.
  • For reaching Jaisalmer, you get a direct bus from Jaipur, Jodhpur, and other cities of Rajasthan. However, it is unlikely to get a direct bus for Jaisalmer from Delhi.
  • From Delhi, there are a few trains that take eighteen hours to reach Jaisalmer.
  • If you wish to travel by air, the closest airport is at Jodhpur. From Jodhpur, you can book a cab for Jaisalmer.

Best Season to Visit

  • One must not visit Gadisar Lake during the summer season as it will too hot and humid at that time.
  • During winters, the temperature goes down, and it is very soothing during the day time. There is one more advantage you get by visiting this place during the October season. The season brings birds along with it which stays here for a few days during their journey.
